i've had the displeasure of watching mertz play every saturday for the last 3 years. my only take is that him somehow becoming UF's starting qb after being a bottom 5 QB in the big ten for three years is the greatest example of failing upwards that i have seen from a college football player in the transfer portal era.

mertz's whole shtick was relying on the run game, being horrible on third down, and then having one great play on second down in the third quarter already up two possessions where you're like "hey that's why this kid was such a highly ranked recruit" and then he reverts to being a genuinely horrible player. i feel so bad for UF fans

the worst part of the graham mertz experience is the hope. you get one game a year where he'll throw for 5 TDs against a subpar team and think "yeah they sucked but it's tough to throw 5 TDs! he's a good player!" and then he just comes back even worse than he was in the games before that. how did UF let this happen

They didn’t get their guys they wanted out of the portal. The running game will have to carry us. We’re lucky to have a great back in Etienne. I could see Mertz being a manager unless the line really sucks next season which is always a real possibility here with the lack of linemen coming here

mertz doesn't really know how to game manage efficiently. like that's all he was asked to do at wisconsin and he still sucked at it. we weren't asking him to go win us games or anything, but just convert those third and medium downs. he couldn't do it and didn't really show indication of being able to do that consistently. i just think it's a really weird get when you're still in the hunt for mccall and have jack miller in waiting.

i also think montrell johnson>>etienne but point stands that you have great rb talent
