So in my creative writing class we have to pick out either movies or books that follow the same plot structure, and they have to be diverse.

The plot structure I got is:
    1. Main Character does bad things
    2. Main Character wants to stop but can’t due to reasons
    3. Main Character eventually stops and tries to do good but karma catches up to the character

I have to give diverse picks and explanations on to how each film follows that same plot structure.

Bad things doesn’t have to be just robbing banks, it could be any type of crime, or a person who cheats on they other, or anything that’s considered bad.

The reasoning of why they can’t stop could be their boss black mailed them, they have an addiction, they owe money, etc etc.

And karma catching up could be they die, go to jail, they friend/other leaves them, they lose something valuable, etc.

    Current list:
    Sorry to bother you
    Baby driver
    The town
    American history X
    Tsots
    Menace to society

    Thanks y’all

  • Does Sorry to bother you work:

Main character accepts a higher position job that he knows is wrong

Main character starts to realize that world isn’t for him but he keeps getting sucked into his job

Eventually main character quits and rebels against them but gets turned into a horse

    • Breathless (1960)

    Thanks for the suggestions homie

Now being a huge fan of good time And uncut gems naturally I looked to those two movies. But they honestly don’t work because of step #2 and first half of step #3

We never get the sense that they wanna quit what their doing. In good time Rob schemes all the way to the end of getting caught

And in Uncut Adam had a chance to be done gambling but he didn’t want to and it cost him his life.

In order for it to work it has to be where the main character truly wants to change for better but then it’s too late

(Baby driver it does turn out good after his sentence, but it still resulting in karma catching up first)

Im talking about Jamie Foxx in Collateral — gets forced into committing/aiding serious crimes, finds a way to get out of it, but has dive back i to save the girl he knows which results in him getting shot.

Can’t remember the movie. Can you break it down for me how it fits?

  • Would Ex-machina work? Can’t tell if you could consider the main character doing bad things? I know he eventually wants out and karma gets him stuck there

it could work for both Edward Norton and Edward furlongs character kinda

    For norton

He’s a skinhead/racist who goes to jail for curb stomping ppl

In jail he chooses to stick w the skinhead white ppl but then meets a black dude doing his laundry job and it opens him up but he still needs the skinhead protection in jail. Eventually gets jumped/raped by the skinheads for doing some s***. tbh I haven’t seen this s*** in a minute so I could be wrong here.

Gets out of jail and tries to save his younger brother from going down the same path and right after he talks some sense into his lil bro his lil bro ends up getting murdered the day after in the school bathroom.

    Edwards furlongs character

Grew up idolizing his skinhead brother and becomes fully immersed into that world once his brother goes to jail

Brother gets out of jail and tries to talk sense into him but he ain’t tryna hear all that s*** cause he got the leader of the skinhead group all in his ear n s*** telling him to stay racist

Eventually decides to listen to his older bro and give up his racist lifestyle only to get murdered in school bathroom next day by some black kid he used to punk on the basketball courts or some s*** (or maybe it was the younger bro of the dude norton curbstomped can’t Remmebrr)

There's a South African movie that came out in 2005 called Tsotsi. Basically a gangster dude comes across a baby that he feels compelled to take care of and return

  • Fruitvale station?

    So basically.

    1. He’s a gangster so he does bad s***
    2. He comes across a baby he tries to save
    3. Cops get him

    Right?

probably The Godfather in some type of way. Basically he starts good and fine, gets more and more involved into his family business/mafia life, and finally turns to doing bad things. I don't quite remember how exactly he tries to get less involved in crimes but he for sure tried to get the family into good businesses especially in Godfather 2 beginning. But that is also a lot of work not sure if you have time for this.
