I literally remember coming home from school and seeing the Rockstar video for the first time and what that did for me. 2 black dudes surrounded by a bunch of skaters singing “you can’t be me im a rockstar, I’m rhyming on the top of a cop car,” Chad on the keys looking cool as f***, That production! It felt like a rock record but it had this hard thump like it was hip hop. My mind was just blown!!! Everything else always felt like an outside looking in kind of experience but with In Search Of, it was like I was discovering myself for the first time. I saw them and I knew immediately that this was me. They are talking about me, speaking through me, for me. I’m Forever grateful.

Very beautiful post. I relate to this so much. Even more so being a black kid from VA myself you didn’t see this type of representation at all got black people so it made me feel so much better knowing P was from VA. I knew like maybe 5 or 6 black kids who skated and wasn’t necessarily “friends” with them. All the dudes I hung with were hood and wouldn’t even let me bring a skateboard around them outside so I never got to learn like j wanted because I was embarrassed. Same thing with a lot of my general interests and my tastes in music. P made me feel like I wasn’t alone anymore. And to hear music being made like he was making from a black person during that time… forever grateful

i love the 2002 version but the simple instrumental arrangements that comprise the og are extremely charming
