I think it's worth watching, especially if you know nothing about it.

Went in blind, I like it. Not sure if I understand the ending but is the rawhide that Peter offered Phil what gave him anthrax

    Gorgeous cinematography
    Good performances all round
Slow burn, definitely see this being way too slow for some

    Spencer was overrated as hell.
Such a one-note movie, repeating the same beats over and over to little effect, and Kristen Stewart doesn’t get much to do besides play a victim. She’s all bristling frustration, and very little else.

The Power of The Dog, on the other hand, I found to be a masterwork. Incredibly tense, with a wonderfully layered character at its center in Phil.

having severe anxiety/panic attacks/self-destructive thoughts due to an abusive and outdated govenrment system = "playing a victim"

    lmao

It literally is tho. Now that’s not necessarily a bad thing, I should have made that clear. It just felt, like I said, one-note, and I think it was done more effectively in Jackie.

Care to break down what you loved about this and the layers you found?

    Sure thing.

I just found it a really engaging character study.

It all goes back to Benedict’s character, Phil. A character who is performing this John Wayne idea of a cowboy, all bravado and bowed legs. Totally in control of his environment, stiff as a rod, but having to repress his real self. You get the sense that this isn’t the guy Phil wants to be, it’s the guy Phil thinks he should.

I love that he shows real effection for Bronco Henry. We never see Henry, but his name carries an unbelievable amount of weight.

And since I bought into the character, I liked seeing him challenged. Just look at his interactions with his brother. Jesse Plemmons plays a different person entirely, a different idea of what it means to be a man. And I just loved watching Cumberbatch stew about this fact. Watching him cope, and struggle, and long for some love and warmth.

Mostly, I found this relatable. Oh my God, that scene where Kirsten Dunst freezes up at the piano. I’ve been there before, and I felt that in my bones.
And we haven’t even gotten to what a good character Peter is. Way more cunning and sociopathic even, than he initially lets on.

When Phil comes back to him at the end with the finished rope, that broke my heart. Something was formed there. I think Phil is envious of Peter, as much as he desires him. He’s envious that Peter is able to be himself.

I’m having a hard time choosing between this, Pig, and Red Rocket.

If you haven’t seen those two, I highly recommend them.

It’s crazy. Red Rocket has balls, and it made me laugh my ass off. If you’ve seen a Sean Baker movie, this definitely falls within his style.

Big focus on authentic, trashy characters, and big focus on where the movie is set, which is Texas in this case. It’s this years Uncut Gems in terms of how dirty it makes you feel.
I thought it was pretty thrilling.
