Not new I didn’t come up with any of these ideas don’t accuse me of plagiarism
Post colonization only:
1788 to late 1800s: dumping ground for the lower classes of the British Isles
Late 1800s to WW2: breeding ground for soldiers for the British Empire
50s and 60s: American ascendancy replaces British ascendancy, in the meantime it is a bastion of old school imperialism
70s onwards: testing ground for interventionist/authoritarian (such as on immigration and guns) policies for the US government, although I believe it’s actually more economically liberal than the US, so maybe it’s more of just general experimentation
Thoughts from people with more knowledge of Australian history, politics, culture, society would be appreciated

Most british colonies were regarded as “emunctories” for which to send the waste of society, be it criminals, peasants/servants or unorthodox religious freaks. So yeah
As far as a testing ground for to-be-implemented Cold War US domestic policies, I’d argue that third-world coups were used more so than Australia to try out authoritative measures.
Today, Australia is becoming an ever more important ally to the US as tensions with China build, and the US just agreed to send them nuclear submarines, so I wouldn’t be surprised if they are being or feel coerced to maintain stability through harsher, more authoritarian measures so that the US sees them as a more reliable ally

I think it has to do with the shift away from British hegemony and the end of old imperialism overall/shift in the world order
With the decline of the British Empire the idea of Australia as an outpost of British civilization became untenable, despite the US being English-speaking, it’s a different beast culturally and socially
after WW2 and the end/drastic decline of colonialism, race became discredited as an organizing factor of society, and it needed to change or else it would become a pariah state like Apartheid South Africa
the rise of wealthy, amicable and independent Asian countries right on their doorstep (while Imperial Japan was antagonistic and Dutch Indonesia a poor colony - easier to justify policies aimed against people from places like that)
and of course there are obvious economic and moral reasons which shouldn’t be discounted
Would love to read a comparative development study of the big five Anglo settler colonies

Sure, a country full of white people killing the aborigines and animals is better
You need to wake your ass up
