If I headlined Coachella and had a hit tv show would I really give a s*** about fw album sales when it hasn't been lucrative since before Napster came out over 20 f***ing years ago.

People think artists make money putting out music.

People also think the acting gig isn’t better as if LL, Ice Cube, WIll Smith, etc didn’t run away from the music slave gig as quickly as they could.

And lastly they think someone can’t just make music because they enjoy the art form.

Gambino is more famous than The Weeknd and Uzi and most people who sell more albums than him lol.

Like you said he doesn’t give a s***

The songs with the most streams on Spotify have around 1.5 million streams rn and the lowest performing songs go as low as 400k streams

That's... not good at all. Jay Electronica had similar streaming numbers in the same time frame and he sold 28k fw (shorter album though)

Let this be a lesson for all artists out there. These corny mysterious gimmicks are just not worth it. The album is amazing but this rollout truly ruined the success of it.

You say yourself the album is amazing.. so what’s been ruined? Unless you’re Gambino’s financial manager or something? (I have to assume he’s doing fine regardless)

More seriously tho its just that people hating on "mysterious music" almost always have zero knowledge or curiosity for music outside of their curated Spotify playslists lol

God forbid anyone try anything different than rapping over hi hats and 808s for 20 tracks. Release a hot single, drop cover art and track list and release the album on Friday at normal time and repeat every 9 months.

Gods Plan, one of the biggest songs of the decade, has 1.5B streams and generated approximately $6M just on Spotify in over 2 years. While the Boy Meets World tour in 2018 generated $58M in box office.

Like who even cares about music sales, music is practically free now

I mean he probably doesnt mind at all. He could have pushed his album 1-2-3 weeks after This is America and it would have been a huge success.

I think he wanted to do a surprise release like Drake or Beyonce and wanted to build hype through the website release. He wanted to keep people on Twitter talking about it and then after building high anticipation just drop it randomly on a sunday and make everyone go crazy.
The problem is that it didn’t work because no one really cared enough.

If he wanted a massive surprise drop, then why did he stream the album on a Monday when he knows fans will rip it, cut up the tracks and get relatively burnt out on it by Sunday. And lose general audiences by dropping in the middle of Weeknd album which had a set date for over a month and releasing an album with no real track names, album art or promo
