Viruses (and any other organisms) just mutate randomly, the ones that have the traits to survive make it thru

But delta for example didn't make things any better, just made s*** worse because it was more contagious, more resistant to the vaccine and not less deadly enough to make overall deaths go down as much as it would have without vaccines
