"Walking on a sidewalk down here after 9 p.m. lately is practically a game of Frogger, only instead of cartoon cars, you’re dodging rats. In Washington Square Park, the bushes shake so much from their furry dwellers that they look like Munchkinland when Dorothy arrives."

Not a New Yorker, but I noticed college students there wear late 90s-early 2000s clothing. Skater pants, e-boy curtain haircut, the whole shebang. I know that this stuff is prevalent in other parts, but they were just everywhere.
I spent the weekend in NY and wanna move there
How do you all afford it
I wouldn’t mind living in the outer boroughs new jersey even

There’s a few ways
1. Job making 75k+. Self explanatory. A decent sized 1br in a decent area is probably gonna run at least 1800/mo even in the outer boroughs. Idk exactly how much you need to make on your own to be satisfied here but I’d say around 75k is probably enough to be comfortable.
2. Splitting with a partner. Living here is much easier if you move in with your partner and split costs. Suddenly you ain’t living on 50k salary by yourself anymore cus the two of you make 100k combined.
3. Living with parents. A lot of my friends still live at home in their late 20s. No shame in it and it allows them to save a lot of money.
4. Roommates. You can have 2, 3, 4 roommates. This is probably the last thing I’d recommend but it’s definitely cheapest outside of living with your parents.
If you don’t mind long commutes then you can look at jersey city which isn’t too expensive and right over the bridge. There’s also fort Lee, weehawken, etc but those are gonna cost more. There’s slept on areas of queens and Brooklyn but it’s up to you if you wanna fw the commute to Manhattan. The Bronx can be fine if you pick a good area. The best and safest areas of the Bronx (ie: Riverdale) are gonna cost more.
Bottom line is you can definitely find something that isn’t terribly expensive but you’re gonna be sacrificing amenities. If you want the doorman, package room, in unit/building laundry, parking space, etc then that 1 br is gonna shoot up to like 2500/mo even in the Bronx

I know everyone in nyc isnt make 75k+ tho
That’s what getting me confused

yea for sure, that's why I'm saying that's just if you want to be comfortable. I guess comfortable has a different meaning for everyone tho
I see some apartments under $1500 in the bronx on streeteasy rn. I see one apartment that's saying they require 55k income. It just depends on what you're willing to sacrifice.
If you're cool with a lackluster apartment (as in maybe a lil old, not a great location, no laundry in building, no dishwasher, no doorman, etc.) you can find something for cheaper
ofc there's also people living in the projects, rent stabilized apartments, cheap rent for low income people. but you generally have to go through a lottery system to get those
