My assumption is because Puma did the original design for the particular uniform that fans want back, they still own it and it cannot be recreated 1:1. This is likely Nike's way of giving the fans what they want without getting snagged by infringements or whatever.

It's either that, or Nike is truly useless. I'm leaning more towards the latter, but the former does have some bit of sense.

It's such a bizarre change too because every other Knicks uniform will have the lettering color scheme as orange with a white outline. If not that then they'll do all blue to contrast against a white uni, and that's normally for classics.
