refresh rate of monitor. 60hz is normal for a monitor, which means that the monitor's picture updates 60 times a second. so 144hz (144 times a second) is quite a big jump. everything is just smoother and also allows you to crank up the fps on games to more than 60fps so games run smoother. also when used with competitive games like shooters it gives you a distinct advantage because u literally are seeing things faster than people without 144hz

theres diminishing returns tho, so the jump between 144 and 240 (another popular choice for pro gamers) wont be as much for the casual gamer but for a pro the extra 5% or whatever could be the difference between getting a crucial kill or not
