yeah but people ITT are talking about 13 years ago, when she would have been one of the hottest pop acts in the US.

And you basically implied Swagga Like Us is bigger than Paper Planes which is just objectively wrong.

MIA would have probably made a comeback in 2012 when Bad Girls was blowing up and she performed at the Super Bowl, but she got sued by the NFL. The NFL suing her was a pretty big deal, so I think what you're saying could only be true by like 2013/14. It would still make her the most successful artist of her type ever. so that probably means something to some people even if that's not you. At that point she was still getting name dropped a lot by everybody from Beyonce to Nicki (Nicki's lines in Monster are about her friendship with MIA)

She was not one of the hottest acts in the us πŸ™„πŸ™„πŸ™„πŸ™„πŸ™„πŸ™„πŸ™„ she had a hit in 2007 and thats it. Thats a one hit wonder, not someone that's a hot act.

Never said swagga like us was bigger than paper planes I said TODAY it holds more weight than paper planes does. Ppl are more likely to know her as the girl who was on the hook on swagga than they are for paper planes. No matter how that makes you feel, its the truth

The NFL suing her was not a "big deal" literally no one cares about her over here, like at all.

bro she was being seen as the future of pop if you look back on the history, she just took a massive left turn arguably too early into her career (or not if it's what she wanted to do)

Bad Girls was a big song too tho and that was like 4+ years later and she performed at Super Bowl half time 4 or so years later too so I don't think that's really one hit wonder material. One hit wonders don't end up at the Super Bowl or with more certified songs years later.

Usually with one hit wonders, their albums are panned. With your most respected critics, not bullshit like pitchfork (altho they loved her too) but people like Robert Christgau Kala was called things like the album of the 21st century. I think you underrate her influence just cos she's a very untraditional artist and career path. She was bubbling from 2005 too (Ye even held out for her on LR but she dropped out on him cos she was too busy). She was everybody's favourite artist to be seen loving at that time-Jay Z, Beyonce, Kanye, Rocky, Timbaland, Nicki etc. She blew up Diplo too who's still hot now. Her next album charted higher in the US than the one which had Paper Planes on it too so again, that to me shows if she hadn't completely changed her sound she would have been on the expected upward trajectory.

But I really don't think Swagga Like Us holds more weight today just cos it has icons on it. A lot of people think that song aged badly even tho I like it whereas Paper Planes is often included in best songs of the 2000s lists. Nobody sees Swagga Like Us like that. And ultimately Swagga Like Us is largely her song, she's got the hook, in the same way the riff from Touch the Sky is Curtis Mayfield's.

NFL lawsuit ain't what hurt MIA commercially, it had a hand in it probably. But what killed her commercially was the pivot in her music subject matter. She became very politically conscious at a time that just wasn't viable. Nor was she all the way established enough to maintain the visibility she had, while still speaking on the things she spoke on.

There's no way to quantify what a classic. Thats just a preference for some.

Pink print is a great album that could be considered a classic to some.

2 singles off that went number 1 and number 2 respectively and pink print sold extremely well.

Men listened to this album; people who don't like rap listened to this album lol

Yall losers but let's not act like she don't have a great album.

well yeah that's what I mean. I feel like if her follow up had been full of Bad Girls and Paper Planes and not 'Born Frees then she would have been set.

I don't even think it's the politics cos her first two albums are very political, telling the immigrant story and talking about world politics, war + impact of foreign policy. There's even a hidden song on her first album called George Bush. I think it's the sound. She was already very cutting edge. I wonder if she didn't give a f*** whether she lost her commercial fans or if she thought she could do it again and make another new sound popular.

I just felt like NFL lawsuit was a like a nail in the coffin if that makes sense. As she was having a little resurgence with bad girls and the opportunity to perform at the superbowl next to madonna/nicki (who'd been bigging her up for years-like on Monster) at that time. NFL moment is like her showing she was never gonna ever play ball and could cost anybody considering backing her more than she made. Plus it was all the instability in her camp-something like 10 managers in 10 years. Delayed creative projects too like the film which was meant to come out but didn't come out until 2018 or 19 (can't remember).

I think Beam Me Up Scotty is her classic. The Pinkprint is her best album so far but it's definitely not regarded as a classic.

But let's not get it twisted, that stat is completely irrelevant when it comes to her. She dominates in every area. Nicki is THE female rapper of our generation.

sure. i've heard way better singers than Jorja but i can still recognize she has a great voice. or i'm listening to d'angelo right now. if i'm looking at neo-soul, i think D makes better music than maxwell but i can still appreciate maxwell.

why can't we acknowledge Nicki's greatness even though we've heard "better"? why does she have to "suck?" lol that's all i'm getting at.

Well music is subjective. A lot of people on the site dislike Jorja too.

She's a better writer than the completely braindead dogshit Soundcloud rapper but I just don't really enjoy her lyrics. Just never really hear a Nicki verse with bars that make me go " "
