the "point" was exactly what i explained, which was i am happy to see a film from a filmmaker i like not have a star studded cast. not sure why this is difficult for you to wrap your head around.

That's not really true. Ryan was a movie star from The Notebook. He had already been in Blue Valentine. He did Crazy Stupid Love the same year as Drive. He did The Place Beyond the Pines before he did Only God Forgives. And his own directorial debut is Refn adjacent.

exactly lol, what are these people talking about. gosling was already nearly or outright an A lister by drive.
either way it literally doesn't matter because whether refn had previously cast A listers or not had literally nothing to do with the point of my post, which was me generally being happy to see not yet another cast ruined by the usual suspects.

meh he was certainly still making his name although I forgot how much of heart throb he was at one point, his coming to the fore definitely followed drive imo
