A very interesting update on a project that’s been dormant for well over a decade: Nicolas Winding Refn‘s remake of “Maniac Cop” is apparently eyeing a 2026 shoot.
“Nic has it as his next project, that will shoot in the fall,” original “Maniac Cop” director William Lustig, who is executive producing the remake, tells Icons of Fright.
Not only is the project moving forward, but Lustig says it now has a distributor, which “will be announced very soon.” As for whether Refn and “Maniac Cop” are a good match, I think they could be—after all, the original already leans on neon-soaked visuals, stylized violence, and an almost mythic central figure.

“What happened with HBO was, HBO got sold to Discovery, and Discovery — after they’d spent over a million dollars developing the scripts for the series — Discovery says, ‘We’re not in the Maniac Cop business,'” Lustig explains.
“They gave all the scripts back to us, so we didn’t have to pay a turnaround, so that was it with HBO,” he continues. “Now it’s moving ahead. I can’t announce the company, but it will become known.”
Lusting adds, “It’s sort of like one of these things that’s bouncing around in your head, and you wanna just get it out. I think Nic is at that point. This thing had so many fits and starts. It’s moving ahead and expected to start shooting the fall.”

i (re)watched the first episode last week and i really liked it. liked how the really slow pace amped up the tension. tho i will say that the thing that most annoyed me is how everyone seems to speak in that weird strange way

The way they speak adds to the vibes and the hypnotic pacing for me
One of the few 10/10 shows
Sad cus Bruce Campbell just posted earlier today that he was diagnosed with cancer :/
Very sad news, but hopefully the boi stays with us for a good number of years still
Very in for this, love me some Refn and the original Maniac Cop is one I have fond memories of due to its super weird structure and genre-bending attitude.
What happened to the avenging silence
i guess you can say that it got.... silenced

i thought it "was shot in secret" 1-2 years ago?
i thought it "was shot in secret" 1-2 years ago?
tbh i kinda doubt that it was shot in secret only to be shelved
I need to check out 2 and 3, only seen the first one

watch 2 at minimum like one of my favorite New York movies even though it was shot a lot in LA sleazy dark perfectly stylized, I just hope they follow through cause the potential of what refn could do with the reference is so evident
