The drama is the first to stem from Amazon's first-look film and TV deal the retailer/streamer signed with Kidman, which was announced in June as one of Salke's first such pacts.
The Expatriates will see Lulu Wang teaming with exec producer Nicole Kidman, who brought the project based on Janice Y.K. Lee's 2016 novel of the same name to the streamer earlier this year.
The story weaves an addictive tapestry that follows a group of complex women and their lives as outsiders in Hong Kong. It’s a compelling exploration of the strength of these women as they persevere through struggles with marriage, career, parenting and unimaginable loss,”
The filmmaker (Wang) behind this summer's box office breakout, The Farewell, has joined the drama as a writer and executive producer. She also will direct multiple episodes of the Hong Kong-set series.
"When I first read Janice Lee’s diasporic novel, I was immediately drawn to the rich characters and the global yet intimate exploration of life in modern Hong Kong," Wang said
"I'm thrilled to be working with Nicole Kidman and Amazon, whose commitment to bold, nuanced storytelling make them the perfect partners to translate this atmospheric story to screen."
