Answer my question
Genres are usually drawn to compartmentalize things which sound alike. The Beastie Boys, for instance, made punk music before they made rap music. Their interpolation of pop music on Licensed to Ill is very punk. Their whiny vocal registers, their shouty deliver, being a band, rapping over rock loops, etc. Their counterculture rebellion was pretty much directly lifted from the punk scene.
What makes Carti punk? His fashion and attitude have long been assimilated by rap music for decades. Nothing about the actual music is punk. It's no more punk than rap music in general is punk.
Punk - “typically produced short, fast-paced songs with hard-edged melodies and singing styles, stripped-down instrumentation”
WLR fits this definition to a tee
oh s***. lil pump also been doing punk this entire time
Punk - “typically produced short, fast-paced songs with hard-edged melodies and singing styles, stripped-down instrumentation”
WLR fits this definition to a tee
typically produced short
check
fast-paced songs
these are not fast songs relative to typical rap music
hard-edged melodies and singing styles
check on some songs
stripped-down instrumentation
This production is quite rich and textured. Whereas punk musicians were often s*** on for their lack of muscianship, the production here has been lauded as revolutionary and masterful.
Desiigner's New English is a punk record under these conditions. Again, rap music in general did take after punk. It is decades removed from that transition. The descriptor is mostly aesthetic at this point.

Keyword, usually.
Punk is one where this does not apply at all. So much was considered punk back then. They created a new term (new wave) just to get played on the radio because the radio didn’t play “punk” acts. Do you see how useless your argument is? If someone wants to call it punk let them call if punk. It’s a broad term and isn’t constricted to a certain sound

Genres are so constricted to a certain sound that they invented "new wave" to differentiate it from "punk".
You foolishly proved my point.
Calling rappers rockstars and their music punk is no different to me than your teacher comparing Shakespeare to Jay-Z. It's a corny legitimization by way of comparing "respected" art to "less respected" art. I'm good.
02Shaq at least actually pointed out where Carti aligns with the conventions of the genre. You're not worthy of his post in your defense.

Nigga no. They did it to literally get played on the radio you are not reading. That is the only reason. Nothing to do with the music
@Teal_ what’s your opinion on carti punk aesthetic and people calling him punk musically? I don’t mind them calling it punk energy wise and aesthetically imo

Nobody calls Tears for Fears a punk band.
Nobody calls Tears for Fears a punk band.
Nobody calls talking heads or blondie a punk band now but guess what? That’s what they were called

Yeah, and then we made up a name to differentiate them. Because they're different. Time is linear. Things change.
I take it back. You are this dumb.

We didn’t do s***. You’re not listening. Seymour stein called them new wave to get them n the radio. That’s it. Nothing more nothing less jackass

Then Tears for Fears are a punk band, right? Blondie too. All those bands we agreed are New Wave must just be punk.
why are threads about this piece of human trash allowed on here
who gives a s*** what this man thinks

I don't mind them calling his fashion punk, but the music itself doesn't give me the same feeling or energy as punk. I just dislike how some of my peers are saying s*** like "this is new / our punk" they say it like it has to be a little softer (or more accessible) for us to digest it or something when punk was never meant to be taken like that at all. maybe pop punk, but definitely not punk. it's crazy because it's coming from niggas who aren't even familiar with the background and would've called it "weird" before this whole WLR s***. we give everybody hell for culture appropriation but when it's one of our own doing it it's ok.

I’ve said it before but if anything I’ll consider this whole thing more so pop punk than actual punk. Which is totally fine. Pop punk was punk fashion with poppy melodic songs with punk tempo. I do agree that calling it punk is kinda a stretch and in a sense rude to the actual genre. If anything was punk in hip hop it was conscious rap and early 80s gangsta rap
carti is the biggest "i dont get it" rapper i can think of for me in the last 10+ years
just bad music imo

If they called it Pop Punk it still would be off because then the sound and the aesthetics wouldn't match that either. The only thing they have in common is that they're both watered down versions of what they're aiming for. I couldn't agree more with that last sentence though.

You don’t know what you’re taking about

Your second sentence is why I was referring to it more as pop punk if anything lol. But yes it would still be off

not to take anything away from the album. I enjoy it for what it is. I just wish his fans would calm down on calling it New Punk and trying to rationalize carti's gimmicks.
