    Oriental

Oriental as in “Let’s go to that new Oriental place”

Or oriental as in “did you see Billy’s new girlfriend? Yeah, she’s oriental.”

Oh s*** thats a really good one.

Outside of war propaganda I never even understood the term Oriental nor have i seen anyone not sus use it.

I also never heard an Asian person of ANY nationality identify as an "Oriental" wither which says a lot alone.

Such an odd word even in the context of the thread. S***s so weird.

idk anyone who actually uses it that's younger than 30 lol

In my community it used to be accepted when talking about objects and places, would especially hear it used by westerners when talking about art/food. But I think it's just been abandoned now and it's normal to just say Asian or Eastern.

With threads like this it reminds me why English speakers have the hardest tome learning other languages and English is one of the hardest languages for other speakers to learn

S*** has so much sub context and double meanings that rely a lot on past experience, inherent instinct, emotion & context clues that most other languages dont have to deal with LMAO

English language is a communication mini game s*** is so slimy

Yeah but thats for western signaling - they dont call themeselves that. Its mainly an Asian American thing too if im not mistaken.

Amd thats mostly stores that been aroubd for decades and decades, newer ones dont name themeselves that.

Its just what Americans called Asians for whatever reason during ww2 and for a few decades after, so Asian people of all nationalities had to play and go along with it.

Its definitely outdated although it was used before, I just dont know how n why it was a thing.

    Its very odd.

Basically it gave a sense of being far away and unreachable, it reaches pretty far back. The word conjures up a fantastical vision of Asia full of stereotypes (food, clothing, aesthetics, manners, language), I think originally it was about Arabia but it kept going eastward with more contact being established. But yeah like most words in the thread it's main issue is that it's 'othering'

From what I've read, apparently it's alright to refer to food, goods, etc, but very offensive to refer to people

Either way it definitely feels outdated in this day and age imo
