Yeah but is that what Beyonce is doing?

She’s a Black American trying to put a positive spin on a continent and culture that has such a terrible reputation.

Idk what the movie’s about but I’m assuming it’s like Lion King but with humans? As in takes place in an African country?

Idk but to me the intention def doesn’t seem like ignorance or appropriation. Like we’re really getting mad at Black Americans for using Black African aesthetics? This is where cancel culture has led us?

intention is not the end of the discussion

lets say a nigerian film company is trying to make a video on Black American culture. this company notoriously known for profiting off of people’s cultures that are sometimes allowed to be inaccurate and generalized, to the point of trying to trademark a major holiday (Disney tried to do this with the Día De Los Muertos).

The film does attempt to bring a positive tone to black culture in the united states. however, it jumbles every black persons in america to a single cultural identity, and the identity is a stereotypical one that is similar to what we saw in the news circuit of the 90’s. A guy with sagging pants who rides in a cadillac with a backwards fitted and works a working class job. Sure the movie paints him in a positive light, but it erases and belittles the multitude of black subcultures in America. The queer black life, the suburban one, etc etc.

this might be a somewhat different standard to our irl one, but it shows that the issue isn’t intention, it’s also how it reflects the subject matter to the audience. And in the case of culture, it must be an accurate, respected display of such

I don’t even know if Beyoncé cares about Africa but at least she trying to do something for the community

Can African-americans director stop casting bristish people for AA roles would be more correct. Jordan Peele and other directors are the one to blame here.

no, there’s nothing wrong with she said tho, only time beyonce acknowledges africa is when she needs a new aesthetic to promote to western audiences, no one is exempt from criticism

Here is Noname and people like you problem. This tweet is in reference to Beyonce's latest project that is centered around The Lion King. The Lion King is a move based in Africa. Beyonce's visual album uses varying African aesthetics to promote empowerment and diversity within the African diaspora.

Beyonce isn't selling you an aesthetic. She is selling you a black empowerment message. The aesthetic is used to convey the message.

Embrace the message of the project instead falling for this BS. Y'all act like Beyonce selling Dashikis for $200 a pop, smh.

One of the biggest problems is everytime we see this type of project that's supposed to be showing love to African culture it's always the kings and Queens and African royalty type s***. Actual Africans will tell you that isn't their reality. It's the same thing as assuming all AAs love hip hop and drink and smoke and what not.

So long as people are profiting this literally means s*** to some folks

Yeah feel like people refuses to see the benefits of this and only the negatives. Like drake got his first #1 w one dance, which is Nigerian music, but he brought a spotlight to Nigerian art

But why does she have to make a movie about every aspect of Black life? Just cuz she’s calling it Black Is King she gotta talk about AAN, metalhead Black kids, rich Black kids? What if she just wanted to portray what she does know about Black life since the only Black suburb kids she knows are her own children. And you just described Black American life I thought the issue was the she was using African aesthetics. Fitted and a Cadillac you describing Jay Z lmao.

I’m so confused fam lmaoo please help me understand. What did Beyonce do wrong?

noname can say alot but she will never be the messenger of the people to start a revolution

sorry but she is not likeable at all

even if I agree with what she says it just sounds like she hates everything

You agree with J. Cole that the way she delivers her message is bad and she should readjust.

Yeah hip hop had a lot of african roots, the position of a mc itself has ties to west african griots. I think this is different tho because unlike that period it's not a derivative of the culture but more so the culture itself if that makes sense
