ive always been under the impression that this is more a linguistic issue than anything. like i get it re: phrasing and messaging, but i think (imo) reform in the sense of rebuilding the concept rather than sole like, complete abolishment is the most logical. First off, i think the idea of replacing of the current hierarchy of police from enforcement of law to the idea of actual communal protection is probably the best wider concept. the issue with the current police is they dont protect, they enforce; given the arbitrary notion of how laws are facilitated in this country, it creates an issue with how police exist. replacing them with decentralized community-based protection (the sole purpose is promoting community protection with people from the actual community, not doing the bidding of arbitrary courts) is a net benefit. there is still deterrent to violent crime, vandalism, etc., but at the same time there is no fear of arbitrary enforcement of arbitrary laws.
also this is a hot take, but I don't believe unions should exist for public service jobs. the entire point of a union is to protect members interests against abuse from heirarchy. but in a public service, who tf are you protecting against? you're protecting your interests over the interests of the people your position serves? There's a clear logical fallacy there.

its not inherently better than a system that criminalizes people and locks them up for being poor, black and brown etc. while still failing to protect the vulnerable at near every turn? news to me, but if that's what you want to sit here and defend be my guest. Like I said, you don't want to actually have a conversation or learn something new. you want to win a debate, and keep creating some fictional criminal without looking into anything deeper than that, and even entertaining the idea that people don't live outside of a system, and perhaps that system impacts them in more ways than you could imagine.

just want to say i dont believe you can reform a bad cop and the police departments across the country has shown little interest in removing the bad ones. That Christopher Dorner manifesto and the leaks out of the Baltimore PD are depressing and scary. But abolishing the police force will lead to unintended consequences in the form of private forces popping up from city to city and lord knows what else

can't abolish the police without changing the relationship millions of people who do not want the police abolished have with said police

the police don't keep your possessions safe. if i came and robbed you, id be long gone before the police ever showed up. thus, they didn't keep you safe.
