that's one way to turn the majority of asians in the city against you. I'll never understand the lefts hard on with awful band aid fixes for education instead of trying to address the actual issues and root problems

It’s okay to disagree with some policies and agree with others. You don’t have to gargle everything the man does

Just say he dropped the ball here and will definitely be losing some Asian support over this.

Go ahead and see what happened when they kept trying to touch education like this in SF

What do you think are the "actual issues" or "root problems" for education?

Good schools don’t make good students. Good students make good schools.

The problem with education is the PARENTS who don’t care about their kids education. Grouping all the kids together isn’t going to fix anything. You fix that by doing outreach and bolstering support for those kids who need it. NOT by trying to drag down the kids who are excelling.

G&T program is essentially special education for the top 10% of youth. These programs should be EXPANDED not closed down. Especially in minority neighborhoods many parents want more of these types of programs and more access to them because it’s the only way out for many low income kids. The G&T pipeline to specialized highscools and then top universities has been a thing for decades and decades and Mamdani should know that seeing as how he’s a Bronx sci graduate.

His party already gave a no comment on whether or not they want to shut down G&T at the third grade level. You can bet they will go after standardized testing for the specialized high schools next

This has been a thing they’ve been trying to push for in NYC for a while now. G&T gone, standardized testing gone, lottery system for specialized high schools. It just doesn’t work.

    newyorker.com/magazine/2022/03/14/what-happens-when-an-elite-public-school-becomes-open-to-all

When one of the most competitive schools in SF went lottery instead of standardized testing for admissions it just caused students with various educational foundations to be smushed together in a sink or swim environment where many kids ended up struggling and weren’t prepared for the curriculum. School had to try to find a way to support those kids, school performance went down, teachers were more stressed, more money had to be poured in to new support programs, etc.

We have to first address the basic foundation of education in this city and country overall. We don’t do that by making things harder for the kids who already have a great foundation. G&T should be expanded and we need more outreach. We need more emphasis on education from PRE-K because trying to come in with solutions at elementary and middle school is already too late 90% of the time. Shutting down G&T is a big mistake and it signals that they’ll will be going after standardized testing next.

As a fellow G&T member,I'm more qualified to speak on this than you.

Those classes were fraudelant as hell and the concept of G&T was F***ING pointless.

All it did was alienate me from the kids in the other classes, giving me a false sense of superiority over them at such a young age that I could not control my actions, and motivated them to hate me.

Some of them worked twice as hard and ended up surpassing me in high school, while I was mad to believe that I was so damn "special" that I never bothered to learn how to study, and was in for a rude awakening once college started. I dropped out multiple times. Lost all my confidence. Took me much longer than 4 years for the degree.

There's not. However he's not wrong that some groups of some races who benefit from gift programs are going to be mad about this. A lot of yuppies don't like having their Rich Kids mixing with poor kids

this is literally where my question stemmed from lmao. because I heard some speeches from black leaders in the time after MLK died speaking on education say “wtf is a gifted or an honors student? then it becomes assisted learning and trickles down into further segregations”

like pretty much what you described is why I asked what’s wrong with all children having access to that same level of high education. when they don’t, you’re essentially creating more lines to segregate kids again based on made up metrics

and your last paragraph is what happened to 2 of my homies. idek if them dudes have graduated yet till this day, they just stopped caring when we graduated and reality hit like crazy despite them being in “gifted” classes since middle school

Lmao I used to fume that I wasn’t in GT. Other kids in it wanted me to be in it too. Lol
