I spent most of my life in South Florida and know this type of New Yorker all too well lol. Love em, but they are mad annoying. Still very funny and entertaining.

He's basically the founder of a NYC community service/neighborhood watch organization/gang from the 80s. A lot of what members would do are subway and neighborhood patrols in neighborhoods that didn't have a lot of police presence or protection, and would act as organized vigilantes capable of making citizen's arrests.

Sounds good on paper, and in their early years, they were pretty positively accepted. However as the years went by and less Black and Latino youths/young adults would join, they saw a rise in members with underlying racist and xenophobic beliefs, which led to the Guardian Angels disproportionately targeting Blacks, Latinos, and immigrants.

My personal thoughts on Sliwa? At times he means well, and yes he is very well known in the city and at times familiar with the pulse of the city and its citizens. However, he's an absolute f***in nutjob and has had no business running for mayor these past two NYC mayoral elections lol

I do give him props for standing up against the Gambino family during the height of their organized criminal empire leading to him getting shot in the back of a cab 3-5 times almost getting whacked by them. Definitely was out in the streets doing the work. However he comes from a very different time and isn't really in touch with the problems of the city today that people actually care about. He's also been aggressively xenophobic like I mentioned the organization becoming over the years. And has sent his Guardian Angels to basically jump and attack people he thinks are immigrants without anything being proven.
