I have been pondering using one of these exchanges for a while I really like the trustless nature of storing and trading my tokens that comes with a DEX plus I'm definitely an Ethereum maximalist
but yeah I'm in 50 different alts so I'm definitely still seeing plenty of gains
still wish I got into Binance smart chain and avalanche back in December when I was thinking about it at first

major exchanges with vaults, address whitelisting and 2fa is definitely a good way to store stuff also
I store my crypto in a lot of different places actually lol, I lost 4 BTC on MtGox and I'm paranoid about keeping all my eggs in one basket

you should really buy stuff you understand and could see yourself using
before gas was terrible I'd actually test every project I invested in lol

I have put as little as $300 and up to $8k
gas will depend day to day I would say try and spend $20 or less for a small trade but that's not always possible everyday anymore
