To be fair there were a bunch of violent movements in the civil rights era, and King still got called violent at the time because of occasional riots (largely instigated by outside forces). The history books just highlight MLK because he was peaceful so that we think we live in this magical land where peaceful protesters always get what they want and aren't put down by the establishment regardless. Nowadays s*** just gets co-opted for publicity nd distorted later on though, like BLM getting "supported" by corporations who's board members have ties to private prisons.
