What’s the story about? His friends are rapists and pedophiles and he feels badly about having to cut ties?
“We hold accountable the ones we hold dear out of morals, but mainly fear
The choice becomes clear
And years of camaraderie suddenly disappear”
Crazy thing is song is hard af if you don’t listen to the lyrics
this feels a bit disingenuous man lol
but you can be friends with someone.. know them for so many years and find out they're not good people
i have an ex friend that i found out raped some girl, we beat the s*** out that goofy ass f*** nigga fr
so you can say i was friends with a rapist too but that isn't a reflection of my character.. don't like the way you're framing this
probably just the fact that it deals with some extremely uncomfortable subjects
i like the way the verses are structured, reminds me of he say she say by lupe
Yeah i do get people that have dealed with those things dont being comfortable with how directs those things are being mentioned
and you can mourn the end of a friendship with someone you were close to while also shunning them
cmon ET bruh

He tells two “stories” about rape and pedophilia and then his whole third verse is like “unfortunately and regrettably I’m going to have to cut ties even though I don’t really want to”. It’s like a weird ass commentary on cancel culture but he chose the two worst possible actions to back handedly defend.
It’s not about the fact that he was friends with them at some point, it’s about the fact that he is making a song about reflecting on cancelling a pedophile. Idk man these lyrics weird af to me

i don't think this is some sort of commentary on cancel culture whatsoever
Unconditional love becomes very conditioned when push comes to shove
that's some real s***.. i really don't understand your criticism of this last verse.. he talks about a pedo and a rapist
final verse is him coming to terms that he has to cut them off.. all the memories they made and time spent together really meant nothing in the end
he's saying he will never forgive them for what they did.. what about this is about cancel culture?
cancel culture should exist for pedos and rapists lol
i dunno our interpretations of gang gang gang are completely different
guess that's the beauty of it all, i guess

I didnt get that vibe at all from the song tbh (the cancelling a pedo)
What i get is that he feels sad about how things ended up and that someone he spent a lot of years together ended up doing that horrible things and he reflects on how the friendship ended
i don't think this is some sort of commentary on cancel culture whatsoever

Explain the line: We hold accountable the ones we hold dear out of morals, but mainly fear

innocent until proven guilty.. coming to grips with the fear that the accusations may be true?
the line isn't written that well tbh

What you mean innocent until proven guilty, s*** flat out says he holds those friends accountable mainly out of fear and to a lesser extent morals

if someone told you that a friend of yours did something terrible like raped a female
what do you do?

Cut ties but not out of fear. Fear of what?

and i highly disagree with this lmao
Cut ties but not out of fear. Fear of what?
so you cutting ties off of accusations?
you don't need any proof at all? just need someone to say they did it and it's over?
so you cutting ties off of accusations?
Oh just allegations, maybe not, would have to depend on context

Nah i mean context and story is everything
Oh just allegations, maybe not, would have to depend on context
i think context is important yes
i don't know the exact situation he's referring to.. so maybe he's holding them accountable due to fear of backlash sure.. i genuinely don't know
but it's not as bad as you're making it out to be is ultimately my point.. i'd be afraid that they're true.. but what do you do?
how do you even hold someone accountable for something you don't know if they're guilty of or not
that's my point

I think the point and message you’re trying to extract from this song is not there because of the way it was poorly executed. Like he completely half assed the lyrics here to the point where the message becomes weird.

i agree that it could have been written better but it's not so badly written that i think he's being a pedo and rapist sympathizer and it's definitely not commentary on cancel culture

Common Ground is so hard
