Well its tonally a complete 180 from blue tbh. Blue is an immediately rewarding album, it’s perfectly produced, it celebrates being a weird geek who loves surfing and playing dungeons and dragons. It made you fall in love with this band who wrote huge power pop hits, completely inescapable ear worms.

Pinkerton has none of that. It’s not perfectly produced, it’s harsh and grating to the ears. The songs about crying about how much s***you have, and how it would feel wrong to get with an 18 year old japanese fan felt like a gut punch to fans who had already fallen in love with the image of weezer that they portrayed for themselves on their debut. It had no hits. It was ridducled, made fun of on TV etc. It was honest, but way too honest. It’s honest in the way that having a few drinks and telling somebody you love them then puking all over yourself is.

Ofc critical and fan reappraisal had begun as early as the very next year, and obviously there were fans who liked it at the time. But the damage was done, Rivers became immensely depressed, would spend time outside of the country and didn’t claim the album again until 2008

There’s like interviews of him in the early 2000s after the band had made after their commercial comeback, with him just s***ting all over Pinkerton and it’s sad
