mixing is where things are placed and mastering is how the final mix sounds EQ wise (eg. bright=lots of highs=shrill.. dark=not a lot of highs=bassy.. middy=muddy..)

or gain.. 2001's bad mastering comes from how the gain was turned way up into the red, crushing the dynamic range
