You like Radiohead? Their early work was a little too MTV beach-house grunge for my taste. But when Kid A came out in ‘00, I think they really made the greatest left turn in music history, soundscapely and electronically. The whole album has a disjointed collection of randomised lyrics and a new sheen of synthesised motifs that really give the songs a big boost. They’ve been compared to Coldplay but I think Radiohead have a far more “thinking man’s band” energy to them.

In ‘01, Thom and the boys released this; Pyramid Song, their most complicated track. A tune so metrically complex, most people can’t even comprehend the 9/8 time signature, the offbeat rhythmic pulse and multifaceted syncopation resembling an actual pyramid. But they should, as it’s not just about a band taking new directions because of the trepidation of their previous sound and history. It’s also about the constant necessity to reinvent oneself in the search for musical ingenuity.
