rvii mean yeah obviously not on the same level but i dont think i agree ditching them would have been the right idea. their vocal blend was amazing and i can't really envision brian working better as a solo artist instead of director of a band
i feel like the familial aspect was important for him tbh. and things like him writing parts specifically for Carl to sing just have a really special feeling
They didn’t have the level of faith in his work and ideas they should’ve. Mike Love in particular made it difficult for Brian to be creative. They should’ve 100% backed Brian on Smile and given him as much time to complete it as he needed. And maybe that sense of familiarity was good for Brian, but I feel like a lot of his mental issues we’re exasperated by the lack of support from his loved ones. It might’ve been better for him overall to separate himself a bit.

you think dennis and carl were going against him like that? idk. and i never heard anything about lack of support from them, could be wrong though. and feel like he always had only the best things to say about them especially after they passed. mike love the opposite story though ofc
and also its easier to say back brian 100% now because we know how genius the ideas were but imagine how hard it might have been back then when you see him unraveling in real time.
without the mental health issues i can still a situation with late 60s/early 70s Beach Boys where Brian is still writing most of the songs but Carl and Dennis made great contributions and cowriting as well, being like the George Harrison type.
