noooo the hobbit was written first
then the lotr trilogy was written like a decade later
takes place in the same universe and is a sequel sort of, but both can be read independently of each other

they really stretched the hobbit out to 3 movies
no reason for thatthe first lotr is the same length and they adapted it to one movie just fine

I think
There's a like dragon like a huge powerful dragon and that dragon gets defeated somehow by someone in like a crazy fight there's like fire and combat and like a big mountain and then that dragons power gets infused into a ring
and then a group of people go to look for the ring after meeting an old wise guy and then on the way to the ring they meet a little crazy guy who used to be normal but then he had the ring for a tiny bit and lost it and now it's all he cares about
And then they get the ring and everyone is like holy crap we want that ring and there's a big war like holy crap giant war there's big guys and small guys and even the trees are moving around in the mix because of this ring
Then I think the ring ends up getting destroyed and the war ends and the one guys friend dies but there's peace now

They stop hearing from the little guy and then when they find him he is hiding in a little cave playing knuckles chaotix on the 32x
Which they haven't even seen before, they only have regular sega Genesis and the original sonic trilogy (which are much better than knuckles chaotix but they don't know this)
New war because the trees are pissed (they didn't even get to play genesis they were still playing those weird 8 bit sonic variants made for the master system) and don't even get me started on those poor big guys who were still stuck playing Alex kidd
They all want this 32 x

Then they all end up getting 32x but they realize again that this little man is still obsessed with some other ring, no longer the Sega 32x
This is when they realize that the little man has actually existed since the beginning of time as a free floating aura defined by our brains in the way that is easiest for us to understand
What he is actually obsessed with is the link attaching the soul to the physical world as he has been stuck being a transcendent drifter since the beginning of reality itself
Now there is no war between the different big guys or small guys or the trees the war starts with themselves and they begin to struggle with the inner turmoil fueled by questioning their own existence
