Gene is still Willy Wonka to me though man. He was perfection in that role.
this is another reason why you can't ever have a successful musical (obviously charlie isn't a musical)
the original movies are such absolute staples of cinema and the actors/actresses that were in them are THE ROLE
you can't recast mary poppins that'll be julie andrews forever, eliza doolittle will always be thought of with audrey hepburn, henry higgins will always be rex harrison etc

Alright I’ll spoil it for you.
Charlie’s Grandpa died of a heart attack in the factory and Willy Wonka flips out on an Oompa Lumpa who can’t revive him. The Oompa Lumpas form a work union and sue Wonka for missing wages and unfair labor practices. They win in court and Wonka is stripped of his chocolate and his dignity and the film fades out with him living under a bridge, living with the trash abandoned like himself.
