I'll break it down this way

When he was making the previous albums, i'd be him composing the songs and teaching the songs and every dynamic part to whoever would come in that day and play on the track.

The live band was a group he formed when he moved back to New York after Streetlife Serenade. And they actually had a group dynamic, chemistry and understanding of the music they were playing that gave it an extra edge, they weren't just random musicians who would come in and play on that particular day with no relationship formed with Billy like the live band.
