i have a huge issue with people always comparing an artists new album 2 their previous work

i think this is why people are having a tough time appreciating music these days, i know it’s always been a thing but god damn it seems like that’s always peoples biggest issue this year with music

started noticing it with earl’s album this year, which i feel was a great album but of course when u compare it 2 srs it’s not gonna meet the hype, they’re 2 completely different kind of albums

then with push, i don’t personally think daytona is all that great myself but it’s almost dry was a good album but people couldn’t help themselves but 2 compare it 2 daytona

don’t even get me f***ing started with kendrick

now sza is about 2 drop her s*** & people are already thinking it won’t live up 2 the hype of ctrl

like nigga enjoy the f***ing music & plz stop comparing it 2 their last body of work why the f*** are people constantly doing this

The best way to approach it is to completely separate it from their previous work and judge it as a lone project. If you go in expecting it to be a sequel or the same quality as a classic you'll be disappointed every time unless a miracle happens.

i can’t remember a time where i hit play on an album & thought “man this better be a superior outing than their last project”

this has been on my mind all day, cuz i was listening 2 mr morale again 2day & i thought 2 myself man if this was anybody besides kendrick niggas would think this was aoty, but because his previous work is so immaculate it’s now all of a sudden a bad album

it’s extremely disingenuous & as music lovers we have 2 do better

Naturally you always want the next album to be better than the last album. I'm a realist, I don't expect every album to be a homerun but I hope they're good enough to stand on their own. The reason why Mr. Morale didn't connect like the others is because the quality wasn't worth the wait time for the general public. They wanted an album that balanced hits and substance, similar to GKMC and Damn. Kendrick touched on heavy topics that overwhelmed casual listeners and he tried to push out radio cuts that didn't have the impact or staying power of their predecessors. Silent Hill, Die Hard and N95 were all relative flops, by Kendrick's standards. Did any of them go platinum?

that’s fair, i can appreciate what u sayin, i guess the wait 4 the album does play a role in how it was received as well, i’m assuming this is why a part of the reason why lauryn never wanted 2 release an album again.. same with andre

& i have absolutely no idea about anything 2 do with sales, i purposely avoid sales & s***, it really has nothing 2 do with the album lol

Lauryn had one hell of a team that helped her craft her masterpiece and losing them all played in a part in her refusal to follow up Miseducation. It makes me appreciate artists like Ye, Hov and Kendrick because they caught lightning in the bottle more than once and overcame self doubt. I'm the same way but I wonder what Kendrick thinks. If he no longer cares about making hits his next album will be even more esoteric than Mr. Morale.

There's nothing in Tory's discography that I'm choosing over this.

i personally think brent & bryson is the move, tory don’t really fit well with bryson
