Obv, this is naturally where the conversation would go but I do gotta wrap this up cus I got a bday party to attend. I can yap about this with you later though.
But to address the crux of the yap-sesh we’ve been having:
Exactly what is said about China that is untrue?
Be specific.
The U.S. will certainly have to move authoritarian over the next century to stay competitive with China. But, explain to me in what way the U.S. is authoritarian right now, that even brings it anywhere near the level of what’s going on in China.
the patriot act, militarization of police forces, mass incarceration, various anti-protest laws in various states, and similar to china, espionage charges against snowden is an example that comes to mind when thinking about the suppression or journalism in certain instances

I think a lot of US citizens have the idea that China is some miserable place where the CCP is treated as God and everything in their daily lives are micromanaged through the state.
China is really bad in-terms of censorship, freedom of speech, etc etc. But going on rednote, you get the impression that most of these people live fairly ordinary lives, akin to us here. Sure, we have different set of problems with our respected governing bodies, but.. I think at the core of what Im tryna say is that through the eyes of their citizens, and through my eyes watching them on rednote, they don’t carry themselves as miserable inmates.
not really that specific, atleast to the extent I think you’re asking for, but thats what I got!
Dremond

The U.S. and China are deeply economically intertwined. China is the U.S.’s largest trading partner, while the U.S. is a major market for Chinese goods.
Tensions are often hyped up through nationalist rhetoric to distract populations from domestic issues such as inequality, labor exploitation, and economic instability within their own countries. This serves to rally domestic support and justify military spending or pseudo-protectionist policies. Both nations benefit from maintaining a stable global capitalist system, as instability could disrupt markets and supply chains. While there are real areas of conflict s***’s often exaggerated to serve political and strategical ends.

Beautiful-put. I’m gonna assume you know a bit more about the atmosphere in China. How would you describe their reality, compared to the impression most Americans have

I‘m not a China-head so you should read the articles I posted for an understanding of the political atmosphere. when it comes to their culture I’m not gonna freestyle some bs idk lol. but what I know is:
P*** is "forbidden" but everyone can find it (like in Turkey lol)
You can just go to china as a western tourist, nobody gives a f*** about you
China has capitalism too.
They are mostly d***free until this very day which is kind of nice.
Donald Trump is actually super popular in China so making fun of him is prolly more controversial than in the USA

Which one of those has affected your day to day life as a citizen in any meaningful way?
