i agree its kind of hard to wrap your head around.
i guess the simplest way to view it is in the context of a working man who is the sole provider of his wife and children. if he dies in an untimely manner, his family is f***ed because they have no income once he dies. while u might say why not just put money aside for that, insurance would provide a bigger payment than what he could just put aside, because the insurer is willing to gamble that he's not going to die in an untimely way.
