rvinah def not, just like with a lot of rock the bass is sometimes just doing a really simple role supporting. even moreso than regular rock because a lot of metal guitar tones have a ton of low end to them so the bass isnt even as important
and especially with some genres like thrash, the bass is just chilling there doing the same as the guitar riffs just to add more weight
like Metallica for example, people praise the bassist a ton (and hes great) but hes still clearly a backseat to the rhythm guitar from James Hetfield doing all the riffs
Iron Maiden bassist is moving around way more. and also helps gives the galloping rhythm thats their signature. hes always doing something melodic
Im never really hyperfocusing in on one element of a track and I just take it in as an entire thing
though I am able to appreciate the different elements that make up a track
like if I was looking at a painting, I'd be looking at how all the parts add up in totality to make it a good piece.
I've just heard most people follow it, but I find myself paying attention to everything; riffs, vocals, bass, rythm are all imp to me equally in a sense.
