You have to beat this giant squid. After that you meet Kai and he says that it was actually his grandfather named Kai that was cursed by a mermaid and that he is dead. The whole island hates mermaids because they think they curse sailors. He lived a lonely life because of it.

So you go back to this mermaid and you tell her about it and she decides to come back to the island with you to meet Kai because she doesn't believe it. Turns out mermaids live to 500 years old. It was Kai's grandfather that she was waiting for. He is dead and he left a letter for her saying that he couldn't return because he had to take care of an orphaned baby. She never cursed him and they loved each other

She does magic to grow human legs so she can walk up to his grave to be together with him one last time. If a mermaid does that magic and then they go back in water they evaporate into foam

She turns into foam after sacrificing herself to visit her dead lovers grave to be together with him one last time
