I think the living room tv is newer and isnt compatible with this ancient mini pc and its silly displayport

What kind of mini pc? Display port is relatively universal there are different versions but nothing old enough that a tv wouldn’t support it iirc

Hmmm. Maybe try a DisplayPort to hdmi cable before giving up. Worst case you can return the cable. But there shouldn’t be a compatibility issue between the pc and the tv as far as I know.

Can see here I guess some adapters might not agree with newer tech or vice versa. May have to try different options to mesh well with the tv in living room. Maybe you just coincidentally got lucky with bedroom tv?
