It's a collection of their singles from like the first act of their career and it's soooo good

They did a funny thing where like 80% of their singles (the ones that actually became hits in the UK) didn't end up on their actual LPs, they were just 1 offs in between their albums. So, substance sorta gives them a home

And it's a f***ing banger album

I honestly think Tip and Ali finishing that album in the midst of Phife’s death changed both of them. Neither one of them had seemed genuinely happy since and it makes me sad

And the fact that they aren’t on good terms anymore makes me sadder

A great piece of hip hop lore is Ice Cube went to NY in 1989 to do Amerikkkas Most Wanted ( a brilliant album) and he didnt have a producer bc Dre was gonna produce it but Eazy E or Jerry Heller blocked it

One of Cube’s NY friends told him to let Q Tip produce it but Cube didnt do it bc he didnt know who he was yet bc Tribe hadn’t dropped any music yet. He went with Bomb Squad instead which was a great choice but I do wonder what Tip woulda did
