tbh i think the whole convo about "separate music from artist" thing mostly comes down to how much the situation negatively affects your mind state when listening. (and there's nothing wrong with that)

if listening to something causes you to have those negative thoughts about something bad the artist did while listening, obviously youre not going to be getting as much out of experiencing that art and you're not gonna wanna listen. we don't just experience art in a vacuum

There's just a huge range of different actions and how they come to mind for us. I think everyone has a limit in some way, like if your favorite artist killed your whole family you're not gonna feel like listening to them any time soon. and we also can't blame people for wanting to listen to someone like R Kelly if for example if they have decades-long connections with his music alongside their communities and families

i don't really like the framing of it as "separating art and artist" as the key thing. no one should really shame anyone for wanting to stop listening to an artist for doing something bad or still finding value from artists deemed problematic
