e tYou made a few mistakes here. Work mind games are my specialty.
Rule 1. Never ask for what you want directly. You always have to make them think it’s their idea, especially if it’s a boss. People are innately self-absorbed and will bend over backwards for their own idea but be resistant as hell to someone else’s, especially “an underling”. When you wanted the tiny numbers, you should have found a way to ask a question where the only solution is to give you access to the numbers. For example “I need your advice. How can I make sure my report is completely accurate without having access to the tiny numbers?”
Rule 2. Never blame anyone else directly for anything. Nobody likes a snitch and also you never win even if you think you’re winning using this strategy. Instead this would have been a good opportunity to say again “I didn’t have access to confirm these numbers. What’s a good way for me to able to do that going forward?”
Boom. You get what you want, every time.

I saw somebody put it succinctly the other day. It was something along the lines of "people moralize their media consumption because we've reached a stage where what you consume is synonymous with your identity."
