For the American market and the October 2001 release, the cover art of Is This It was changed to a psychedelic photograph of subatomic particle tracks in a bubble chamber. The image first appeared on new age artist Bruce Becvar's 1988 album The Nature of Things. The same image appears on the cover of The Scientist as Rebel by theoretical physicist Freeman Dyson. A portion of the image also appeared on Prince's 1990 album Graffiti Bridge.

The US version of the cover is different, featuring a photo from the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) showing particles in a bubble chamber, after the band decided the original was too suggestive for American audiences
It's a pic from the 70s

Well, the point was that they could've been inspired by Prince who'd had a brilliant idea to incorporate it on the Graffiti Bridge cover.
now what the hell does either of these albums have to do with nuclear research

I think he painted the 1999 cover? @sizz If I'm spreading misinformation, please blame it on my particularly s***ty memory.
No, but that's also beside my point.
It's a wonderful album
