pre wendy and lisa prince did a lot of super basic pop progressions that aren't special at all but he'd sit on just 1 chord for the entire verse or maybe hook. He even does it later like on kiss where the whole verse is just A Major.

He has quite a few songs where he won't start on the 1 chord but will start on the 4th or 5th chord and just move up diatonically like on red corvette, (starts on the 4 chord, goes to the 5 and 6 and then 1) .

Not really a trick but more of a keyboard type of writing he does is whatever the riff or keyboard part is he just loops throughout the entire song, similar to that first part where he sits on 1 chord for a part of the song, think of 1999 or let's go crazy the synth doesn't strange at all apart from the pre chorus and bridges.

super basic stuff but whenever he plays minor chords he always adds a 7th or 9th and when he does major chords he typically takes the 3rd in the bass to create a bit of extra tension

Prince is a strange one though because nothing he does is REALLY that complex it's more or less extremely basic and even formulaic at times, often people who have HUGE outputs in any form of music aren't really trying to innovate or stray too far from their set style, same goes for composers like Bach or Mozart where you can almost predict what they're going to do. A lot of the magic is the actual production in his songs and his drum programming which is it's own whole thing

oh and not unique to prince but he uses that I-IV-V in hundreds of his songs, any of his more blue's style tracks he uses it, Kiss hook, All of Delirious, Peach, A Major blues etc

He's one of those artists where the sound per say will make it sound like prince more than the harmonic tricks or style of writing. If you had a linn drum machine or any of keyboards (dx8, oberheim 4 voice, OB-X, Fairlight CMI) will instantly make you go oh that's prince

whatever style or sound that always gets you even if it's just like one chord change in a song, google what it is and from there like experiment or if you can get by read a few things online about it. A lot of people say just to experiment completely on your own but it's always seemed pointless to me tbh because you'll just end up writing basic progressions which is fine but it's a waste of time if you wanted to get a more unique sound.

Scaring the hoes with musical a***ysis is a part time job

fr though it's just from studying music so long, there isn't much to say when it comes to a lot of pop or contemporary artists though because the production is more important than the actual "music" in it
