    |I guess I’ll give my review. I’m ngl, it felt kind of like taking a college course or something and that there would be a test at the end. It was definitely way better that it was presented in comic format but it did feel like a slog at times.

I can see why Tuneout enjoyed it or someone that is into art as a profession would. For someone like me, who isn’t necessarily into the science behind art, I can’t say that I had a good time. But not terrible.

Some of the points he made seem forced. Like that comics uniquely stimulate the readers imagination and force them to “fill in the blanks” between panels. I don’t think this is unique to comics at all. Books provoke a lot of similar thought, and even many movies use things happening off camera or ambiguous meanings for the same purpose.

I do agree about the pacing though. That’s probably unique to comics as it forces you to focus on certain things and not others kind of randomly. There are definitely some pages I move through faster than others.

I did never really think of hieroglyphics and stuff as comics before so that was kind of a cool realization.

yeah it is like a college course on composition and comic design. but i think its presented in such an interesting way. and he knows his stuff, since the comic itself flows so well.

filling in the blanks between panels is def not unique to comics. all visual art is about filling in blanks. thats how movement is created in a single painting, or how you imagine scenes from movies in your head and stuff. or stuff in books.

comics are unique because of how much is left out between stills. the entire story is really what you imagine happening between panels and not whats in the panels. unlike movies, where you are spoon fed a lot of the scenes. books can slow down since words are much slower at getting across visual information than a picture.

also (this was written in the 90s) when comics were really looked down upon as an art form, which after the success of so many comic book based movies, that perspective isnt as common.

but comics, a print based medium with words printed alongside visuals, is a relatively new medium (excluding its forerunners, like hieroglyphics) thats very underutilized and young compared to others. and it has unique advantages other storytelling mediums do not.

I think it was a great suggestions for ppl in the club because it deepens the appreciation of the medium by understanding some of the hidden magic that goes into making them!

i am glad i got the extraterrestrial to learn new information
