To preface, I think evil is most likely not a real, tangible thing. Of course, I have my own moral frameworks and call things "evil" accordingly, but I don't think there's an objective good or evil if that makes sense.

Now to answer your question: I think we're living in an extremely peculiar period of human evolution, where our latent evolutionary instincts are constantly clashing with our only-recently conscious brains.

Everything that built and molded our species up until very recently was to optimize us for competition and survival. Natural selection has no moral weighting. It only optimizes for survival and reproduction. That means there's a lot of things built into us that I would personally consider "evil".

The advent of consciousness in humans gave us the ability to construct and use a moral compass, but that doesn't change the fact that we're still living in a brutal world where competition is necessary for survival (in some places, you may not actually die, but you're still competing for status, resources, quality of life, etc.) and reproduction. The capacity for reflection and moral judgement combined with a world that demands competition and a body/mind built to compete causes intense cognitive dissonance, which leads to moral judgements only being used selectively and/or strategically, orrrrrrrr people subconsciously frankensteining their moral compass and beliefs to align better with their natural thoughts and actions.

The social dance that everybody plays is largely primate instinct mapped onto a modern context. A large swathe of the population, with an almost disturbing level of grace & poise, will naturally lie, cheat, steal, gossip, exclude, shame, and f*** people over just enough to optimize their position in the competition, while still maintaining the delicate balance with their reputation. And the weird part is that a lot of this happens on autopilot, and if there are any moral hangups, the brain comes up with some sort of justification that is automatically and uncritically accepted.

The unfortunate truth is that most people are either unaware of, unwilling to do, or incapable of doing the metacognition necessary to understand and minimize the harm that comes from this.

Bottom line, I don't think humans are inherently evil in a divine sense, but I do think there's a lot of inherent evil in the way we're wired. It's largely controllable, but nobody fully masters it, and most don't master it at all.

yea i think mfs egos be the worst
