You can have post partum depression/psychosis and simultaneously commit a murder that was pre-mediated with presence of mind. But basically, her defense is using the former to attempt to acquit the latter which is a dangerous precedent

·3 repliese tI don’t think these are the two choices brother. Either she’s guilty and goes to jail or was “insane” and walks free shortly or eventually. Her “diagnosis” was acute post partum psychosis (which is a months long condition), not a life long mental illness. If she’s acquitted by insanity, there is no reason to regard her psychotic for 40 years. She will be free

all I'm getting at is that I and 99% of people are not qualified to say whether or not she was in a psychotic state (unless there's some clear cut evidence that she obviously wasn't, I haven't been following the case that closely), but if she was, then surely she shouldn't be punished for something that happened as a result of that state
my only concern would be evaluating and monitoring her to see if she's at risk to do some s*** like that again, because that crosses over from moral retribution into a public safety concern
obviously if she killed the kids out of her own free will then lock her up forever and throw away the key.
but that brings me back around to my original thought: I just don't know why this has to be some big OJ style culture war thing. People project their own litany of political views onto these types of things and argue about it from that perspective, and as a result I've seen very few good opinions from either side of this argument.
