yes I would say the "modern pop" idea start in 80s mostly especially sound-wise but that also had its strong roots in the 60s with Beatles and motown stuff. and in terms of the superstar celebrity component earlier with Elvis Presley

the "traditional pop" era with Sinatra and s*** worth a mention too but that also feels a lot different and thats why its usually distinguished as such and not mentioned in the same breath as MJ or Beatles and such

and notice how the developments in this go along with how mass media was developing at the time. the early radio stars of popular music were huge and sold a lot of records but feels a far cry away from "pop music" concept because the form of the industry didn't really allow it to serve the same purpose to the audiences
