What Wiz does always worked for him and I don't think he has received the amounts of hate Mac has received when Mac dropped BSP.
Mac felt the need to prove people wrong and worked on his writing, rapping, started producing and exploring sounds while Wiz didn't had to do any of that because what he was doing was cool already to the people.

We don't know where Mac would've went musically without BSP's reception and the hate he received at the time.
He forced himself to get better, Wiz don't have that problem.

Very true. Guess it comes down more to perception of the person more so than the music. BSP Mac was considered corny so he had to switch up. Wiz was always considered cool so never had to switch up. He constantly gets a pass for the same flow, style & half ass lyrics cas people are sold on him as a person.

Probably perception mixed with quality of music and what was the trend musically at the time.
Mac was an easy target because he was making music of questionable quality listened by frat boys who dropped N words playing Call Of Duty and young white girls in middle school.
It was easier for hip hop heads to point the fingers against a jewish kid with a terrible fanbase and music of questionable quality.

I'm from Italy and I remember an italian underground rapper who is an incredible hip hop head, who spits really hardcore raps, clowning Mac in a line of a song in 2011. The hate for Mac arrived even here in Italy because his music wasn't that good and the perception was he was a lame white kid.
Fast forward to when Mac died the same italian rapper paid respects to Mac on his IG story with a pic of Mac from a show basically saying Mac's music got better and he changed his mind about him.

I've never really known many if any artists that exponentially made better music & changed people's perception of their music the way Mac did tbh. Especially considering his mainstream success early on.

I don't think Gambino had the same success Mac did with BSP early in his career but he's in the convo for those artists who changed people's mind about the music
