so that cover for Westside Gunn’s Pray For Paris is literally a Caravaggio painting that Virgil Abloh photoshopped chains onto. super lazy imo but whatever. anyway, Noah realized this Basquiat painting is a reference to the Caravaggio David and Goliath painting that West used for Pray for Paris, and since the Mach Hommy record is called Pray for Haiti, he saw the connection and basically just drew a Haitian flag like Mach wears over the character in Basquiat’s painting. it’s fitting because Mach is a huge Basquiat fan, references him lyrically all the time and samples the Basquiat movie pretty often. what’s even crazier is Basquiat is Haitian AND Puerto Rican, Mach is Haitian and recording the album in Puerto Rico. and, one of the dudes who is with them in Puerto Rico and is playing a big role in the documentation of the record is one of Mach’s homies named Mozam, who is a professional fisherman and has been taking them all out on the boat to fish in between recording sessions. and the Basquiat painting shows David and Goliath as fisherman and fish 🤯!
