I'm not gonna necessarily defend Mach on every instance of his differentiation between beatmaker and producer but there is often a distinction to be made and if it was a third party doing production work I don't think people would have any issue crediting their work.
It's unfortunate that producer in hip hop has come to mean a hybrid between a writing credit (the more significant portion of the work generally speaking) and production work - there is often a lot to be done to make a delivered beat work in the context of a given track - that is work that deserves crediting, especially when performed by a third party.
However the "beatmaker/beats by" credit often feels unnecessarily reductive: even if it's understood that there's more to a "beat" than just the beat, it feels dismissive when it's issued in the format beats by Sadhugold, production Mach-Hommy.
This is a problem that imo is mostly semantic and which often serves to dismiss third-party production work which in other genres would be credited, no questions asked. In an alternate timeline where the dominant name for a person who provides instrumentals for hip-hop tracks was beatmaker instead of producer, no one would bat an eye at production credits. Unfortunately I think the only realistic solution is the proliferation of separate beatmaker and production credits with more liberal use of co-production credits.

Seems like it really would be helpful to have another term for the 'production' work of pulling all the beats together, sequencing and editing, additional sound design, etc... I guess this is in part what Westside is getting at with the label of 'curation'

I seem to remember in an interview Mach saying that he had helped pull together other people's projects without getting credited for the labour, so maybe his wilfulness in describing himself as the 'producer' is a kick back against that

It's gonna be an uphill battle to do it that way round because in the rest of the music industry that "production" work is called production. If I give a riff or write the melody for a song that's a writing credit, not production. It's a difficult problem and I don't think Mach is necessarily always in the right but I definitely think the root of the problem is the ambiguous producer term
