been working on some heavier music
posted a lil teaser for it using footage I generated thru text to vid.

if y’all make music too of any genre hmu I’d love to work on something. I make beats and do all of my production / mastering as well

Funny, i started with ableton and fruity loops makes no sense to me at all

  • I didnt use the beta too much but the standouts to me were the new browser (which isnt without some faults) and the midi clips modifier thing. Im expecting there to be some crazy m4l devices for that soon.
But i think overall its a bit lacklustre.

how many tracks yall projects have on average?
this s*** i just made has only 4 tracks and it's already done tbh
feels kinda lazy and low effort to have less than 10 tracks

  • made a beat using a sound i made today feeling good about that

maybe this was badly worded. i was talking about the amount of audio and midi tracks for a single song. like this song i made has only 1 sample and 3 midi tracks

How I get my 808s louder

    Eq
    Distortion
    Compression

What am I missing maybe routing the 808 to multiple buses?

Lower/cut the low-end of other tracks so that your 808s can cut through nice and clear.

What compression? Sidechain compression is what I usually use. Can be subtle, can be harsh. Use a compressor on the track you want to turn down when the 808s come in, then add a side-chain input from the 808 to that compressor. It will only trigger when the 808 comes in.

Parallel compression is a big W for me.

Distortion is one thing, you could go lighter with simple saturation.

I can't think of anything other than those things you said, might just be that you need more practice with them to get the sound you desire. There's quite a lot you can do there.

That's perfectly good, dw. I used to worry when I heard other producers had 100-track songs on average and whatnot, but it heavily depends on genre and style. It doesn't matter. If you can't find any sound missing in your song, then it's good. Just keep practising and learning. I variate between, say, 4-20 tracks.

Sidechaun compression is a good idea imma try that, I remember people sidechain the 808 to the kick but I never rly liked that so much

You can sidechain anything to anything so long as you have a good reason to do so. Or if you just like how it sounds. Good luck!

I always think keeping it simple is best, cut the lows in your main melody/sample and EQ according to taste. Not a fan of sidechaining personally because it usually takes more effort than the other solution and often gives an inferior sound at least when I do it.

Also pairing it with a good kick will do a lot of the heavy lifting and make it feel like it's hitting harder than it really is.

Yea it also rly depends on how processed the 808 u pick is

I'm personally not a fan of very loud kicks but I like heavy bass

I was gonna add that at the end, it's why I don't like majority of the 808s you find in trap kits is because there's often a kick built into them which f***s the sound a lot when you do any kind of editing to them

synthpop album that i put out back in january recorded over the course of the last year entirely on the hardware synths i've started collecting over the last year or so (save for the drums since those are so much easier to program in the daw)

i'd recorded like 50 songs during these sessions these were just 11 of my favorites lmao

Pretty much no wrong answer tbh. People who use logic will say logic is the easier, quicker learning curve. People who use ableton will say the same about that.

Plus there are so many YouTube tutorials and Reddit Q&A’s for basically any question for either. Whichever you pick if you just dig in and start making stuff, you’ll pick it up within a week or two.

The only slight way I could direct would depend on which would be thinking about what kinda music you’d be mainly going for/wanting to make? Lmk. But you can really do any music on either of those two so I like I said you can’t go wrong
