I don't wanna be that dude who just blows up, I don't know if i even could at the moment! 😳 Yet I want to grow a fan base. People who just acquire fame at a fast rate usually tend to die down pretty fast, and I am unaware if I'd call my music mass marketable in the first place. I'm going to start finding that niche audience of people that f*** with what I make, but indubitably, theres a lot of other stuff that needs to happen too.
I don't think I'd want to sign to a label until I know that I couldn't handle being independent, and I'm at that point where I need a label to come in and take care of those things that I'm not able to do anymore. The important part is leverage though, because if I signed right now, I could easily get shelved and never see the light of day, but once you can prove that you can generate money and have an audience that f***s with you then a label will actually decide to give you a push and get behind you. You shouldn't sign to a label if you need the label more than the label needs you (fax) You'll always be the labels b**** no matter how big you are as long as they know that they're the ones you made you who you are.
Leverage is everything in business, not even just music business. It's important to understand business before trying to make it in the music business, so I advise trying other things or at least studying regular product business, because at the end of the day, your music is a product and if you're trying to compete in a certain league you gotta make sure the product you're selling is able to stand next to the rest and compete. You need to be able to understand the tactics that those other products use to get where they are as well. A lot of people see the music business in the wrong way because there's such an emotional connection to what they make, which isn't bad, but if you're not just making music for yourself then you have to understand that theres a lot at play in how records are sold. Yet that also doesn't mean that you have to be in those leagues either because you can be more successful on a smaller scale.
A lot of what I learned from product business is that theres markets and testing involved in everything sold and everything is done at a small scale before it makes it in front of everyone. Get your audience going and show that what you make can work in a bigger market. It makes people look at you different and give you better opportunities, because if someone is going in invest in you you have to prove your worth beforehand. That's why it's so hard for people to get that "big break", just blow up, and get signed.
You can go through the trial and error on your own and eventually people will send you offers before you even have the chance to ask. Thats the leverage you can give yourself to ensure your own success. Build up your social media presence and pay attention to the people who f*** with you and cater to them because they're the ones who will lead you to where you want to be. I suggest studying e-commerce, advertising, and personal branding, then bring what you learn from that into your music
Theres also some books that I can recommend to you too just hit me up and I'll guide you on it a bit
